Human 03:47
Human I dangle from the world a milk tooth from a gum electrons buzzing I just can’t get a damn thing done busy losing you and chasing my blood all dopamine-drunk yes, time must’ve curled behind some pixel-ripe sun my infant mind has zero clue who we’ve become the tide inside’s all swamped with Xanax and plastic toy guns I’ve been gone but I could not say where I’ve been not sure what kind of human this world needs I just crashed here in the 21st century so let’s break this all nice and gently a carbon heart like a giant stone is always tumbling after me I’m Harrison Ford in that film about archeology bone digging for some meaning in the filth of my history but I have lived as I spoke as I dreamed with my software up to date I praised the DJ who boldly presses play and I hoovered up the dust of dead slaves in one sniff of cocaine I’ve been gone but I could not say where I’ve been please spell out what kind of human this world needs I just crashed here in the 21st century so let’s break it all ever so gently
2.
Screws 03:56
Screws with no war to maybe not come back from I set about getting some real scars went too far and got my poison all wrong now there’s one or two screws rattling loose in my heart in my heart I was with you when the thread just went and snapped no fanfare or thunder from up high no candy trail to help find my way back I disappear and stay right here for you to find for you to find you and me each half crazy illuminated waist deep I lost all grip on myself I got low now it kills me when you look in my eyes you no longer see the fairytale and fire you see demons chewing Rorschach butterflies I know my mind burst but I am not cursed I’m just tired I’m just tired if you run I won’t blame you one bit whether from within or from the sky above there is sickness raining down that will not quit but in this wild life under heavy skies there’s room for love room for love you and me each half crazy all medicated pill-sweet I lost all grip on myself I got low
3.
Story 03:07
Story I bow down to the mountain I drop to my knees by the sea in some piss-poor gesture of giving in to all that will outlive me the facts pour in, I cover my ears as our hand basket bobs down the Styx when the story breaks will you give me your angle on this? disbelief hails down and dead birds get spat from the sky while a cracked girl screams from a crowded cage somewhere on the borderline I don’t see out so far from my make-believe bars and I’d die for a part to play so when the story breaks feed me a good line to say might be easy to seem free to be meaningful and brief might get harder to breathe it is for me is it for you? is any of this getting through? so what can you do if you want to stay wired to the brain? push that magic button for a treat then a trick swallow lightning down with the rain if you abuse your choice to try and use that voice you might burn at the stake of your claim when the story breaks it’s real life going up in flames I bow down to the mountain I drop to my knees by the sea it is all I can do to keep my heart wide to the idea that I am still free the scoop is this: it is our turn to blitz up the dreams of this desperate age when the story breaks will you hold the hammer or the page? when the story breaks will you hold the hammer or the page?
4.
Spiderman 04:13
Spiderman the spider flicks my eyelids down and crawls into my open mouth don’t ask me who I failed today I’m trying to smoke some evil out I lived my life as if I’m the dream of some long dead romantic poet woke up sick and shoulder deep truth hurts the more you get to know it I’m so deliriously happy because I’ll be sad to leave when the bony loner comes looking for me I’ll have thousands of mayflies buzzing in my key Mary, will you stick around ’til I fall asleep an empty space to kill some time can’t take the heat of your eyes on mine you see the wreck I sunk myself in Jesus blood and godless brine the spider flicks my eyelids down there’s nothing left to see here now I’m so deliriously happy because I’ll be sad to leave when the bony loner comes sniffing round for me I’ll have thousands of mayflies buzzing in my key Mary, will you stick around ’til I fall asleep Mary, we made it count, didn’t we

Music 03:18 video
Music weightless, grateful rise like embers from my chest of flames dance me out that door like a spark into heavy rain outside world’s so frightening hide me underneath your razor blade tongue I’ve got my music don’t need my head screwed on shadows on my skull wall how do you get through the lonely days? blast my cobwebbed throat I’ve got all kinds of suffering to celebrate keep your easy ride keep your eyes fixed on white goods and mod cons I’ve got my music don’t need my head screwed on there lies love there lies a love violent enough on paper you’re an exile and I am poor as sin we’ll be criminals come Christmas time prisoners come spring stay free inside your flesh there’s a breath lifts you up to where you belong I’ve got my music don’t need my head screwed on there lies love there lies a love violent enough to shake your ribcage shake your ribs to dust

Atomise 04:04
Atomise atomise the moves you’ve made water rippling for three decades as Saturn’s eye pulls focus on you a riverbank bursts and you get soaked through you get soaked by the truth some game-changing pain around the bend most times you can smell it coming from a mile off we can be afraid, but let’s not speculate be awake in the moment where the breathing is soft whatever happens next there is only one thing left I love you unfathomably you’re atomised and so am I we lay our palm skins down and we tread those soft lines I see vigils up ahead you see a scorched high rise we’ll be part of this world see it now with clear eyes and whatever happens next there is only one thing left if the future eats us alive at least we’re delicious if the future leans in shrink wraps our hearts soufflés our limbs then at least you and I were delicious
7.
Road 03:28
Road are your ears burning yet? been singing your praise to the windscreen flies got next to nothing left just you at the end of a long night drive I’ll get myself straight I mean it this time I’m chewing up the road to be by your side by first light saw this country split from city to forest to backwater town ask around, you’ll take a hit life on the edge can really grind you down wash this smoke off in your full moon eyes I’m chewing up the road to be by your side so give me lightning bolt blood dance on a razor’s edge we want the danger, don’t we love? just give us lightness of touch a small place to rest our heads sometimes enough is just enough now I see the way I’m wired made my peace with the things I’ve done hope spreads like wildfire as I move to you and a burning sun best get my head down we don’t have much time I’m chewing up the road to be by your side by first light
8.
Ignited 04:01
Ignited early doors, get two in shut my blood down nice and gentle before I spin the struggle into something cheap and sentimental I’m a moving target I tango with the fear as the gods take aim to be ignited to get my hands around a flame did you pray like I prayed? breathing dreams into the mist did your angels take the blame when their CEO ceased to exist? be a moving target as that first nail gets pounded in I was ignited but the goddamn game kept changing burned myself out back there in truth burned myself out divining you (and I came quite close) so which parts shall we try and save now the new world’s licked our armour raw? how separate are the waves from the shapes they carve into the shore? we are moving targets when you get right down to that burning core we are ignited we’d vault the globe to do it all once more as long as the mystery’s worth burning for burned myself out back there in truth burned myself out divining you (and I came so close)

Particles 03:58
Particles weighed down by all there is to lose I was dying for some tenderness to bruise to throw a lasso round a fake chalk moon and pull it down for Mary behind the fiction of that love all dead eyes and prescription drugs all waking through the nights to pop the blood-filled bed bugs and get sucked by kisses so weary got to laugh at these extremes we cut through tendons while we cook up tandem dreams I’ll never know what such absurd affection means as it fragments in memory with a love that no one could touch we were all over touched you said ‘I can help you look up if you can help me look up see the particle dust this is all just us I can help you look up if you help me look up’ you were such a dignified caged bird you were always flying behind, flying behind your eyes I’d race to catch you in these peasant poet’s words but you’d be gone before I could think straight with a love that no one could touch we were all over touched you said ‘I can help you look up if you can help me look up see the particle dust this is all just us I can help you look up if you help me look up high enough high above all of this’ weighed down by all there is to lose I was dying for some tenderness to bruise to throw a lasso round a fake chalk moon and pull it down for Mary

Chain 04:06
lord, there's hunger in our veins send down your relentless rains make us clean and pure again then line us all up on your heavy chain I've entertained some dreamed despair tried to tie down all that seemed unfair I've been splitting atoms, splitting hairs adding miles and miles to the chain I wear you taught me to ask for help sometimes to reach out when I'm thrown a line to see some locks picked and to praise the crime whether the chain is yours or the chain is mine I’ll be thieving love ’til it sets me free I’ll be thieving love ’til it sets me free I’ll be thieving love ’til it sets me free I’ll believe in thieving love ’til it sets me free I love to stand where the ghosts of martyrs dwell and see history repeat itself I love to lay in the fields where the mighty fell it keeps me close to the chain they choked on as well in purer times I did not dare to doubt what’s real, or to even care I let the sky wash over as the tide let it rust the chain I keep coiled inside I’ll be thieving love ’til it sets me free I’ll be thieving love ’til it sets me free I’ll be thieving love ’til it sets me free I’ll believe in thieving love ’til it sets me free if I'm not free at the break of day I'll sing my heart out from a chest of flames I'll feel a hand on me wherever there's pain and I'll dance to the rhythms of my own chain
11.
Moonrise 03:34
Moonrise who lies here self tainted a primal truth elaborated you are hungering deracinated sick with the freedom for which you’ve waited how many more times will you see moonrise, see the blue skies deepen? half awake in the dull afternoons you could hear all things existing outside that simple room calls to prayer and the beast market rumbles the exhausted jaws of time crunching numbers how many more times will you see moonrise, see the blue skies deepen? who you are can melt here quick as butter you won’t be the first in the grit-pool to dive upwards and go under to relent to the upward pull of the universe the covers twisted around your feet your face twisted around your thirst and there at your side someone cries for your life the fabric stretched thin and weakened how many more times will you see moonrise? see the blue skies deepen? reach out one more time to pierce the sky let the night come out screaming how many more times will you see moonrise? see the blue skies deepen?
12.
Willow 03:56
Willow just as the willow weeps to shelter the riverbank you slump to find a sleep to cover you now your heart’s gone cold and blank tell me how you really feel how alone you really are let the words claw up from your throat it might hurt like hell but this is how the healing will start you said ‘no more’ I know you’ve fought hard as hell I can see you’ve fought yourself raw but let this sink in: you do not have to fight by yourself floor is falling falling far below look around you this goes down inside someone you know just as the willow weeps to reach down into the blue you dip your fingers deep and an ancient pain wakes up somewhere at the roots tell me how you really feel no ‘manning up,’ no bolted doors in this moment we are just real we are brittle and burned and real and nothing more you say ‘no more’ I know you’ve fought hard as hell I can see you’ve fought yourself raw but let this sink in: you do not have to fight by yourself floor is falling falling far below look around you this goes down inside someone you know you do not have to fight by yourself

about

The twelve new songs of Atomise reflect upon an atmosphere of division and unrest that has crept into everyday life.John Elliott’s lyrics seek to explore those little pools of light in the darkness; moments of real connection, meaning and magic amidst the chaos.

“Atomise” was written during the summer of 2018, Elliott shutting himself away from the outside world in a remote rural Pembrokeshire cottage where he recorded rough demos of the entire album on an old upright piano. These demos were later taken to the band’s North London studio where Tim Heymerdinger played drums and Elliott added further instrumentation with recording engineer Sonny Johns (Fatoumata Diawara, Portico Quartet) at the helm.

Many of Elliott’s original skeletal demos were maintained in the final recording sessions as their distinct solitary mood - complete with creaking piano keys and nearby birdsong - had captured something very special.

The Little Unsaid violist Alison D’Souza assembled a string quartet in Stoke Newington’s 16th century church to lay down the string parts on “Atomise” and the final mix was created in Oxford by composer and orchestrator Graeme Stewart, whose credits include film music with Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead).

'Entrancing…deeply atmospheric…songwriting of a real rich quality, all held together by an intensity of approach, by a focus on the emotional weight music can carry’
Clash Magazine

‘The first thing you notice about these songs is their emotional honesty. Elliott writes about mental illness from the point of view of someone who has lived through it and come out the other side, someone who is acutely aware of how close he still is to his demons. But his songs are full of hope, full of the potential for a better future despite the continued proximity of depression.’

Some words from John on the albums lead singles:

Road
I drive around the country lots and wanted to make my own twisted little version of a drive-time radio rocker – a song full of the motorway melancholia that comes when you’re travelling alone all over the carved-up country, but that also chugs along with the thrill of racing to get home to someone you love.

Human
Whilst writing this song I imagined it being sung by a washed-up, haggard 1940s crooner who’s been chewed-up and spat back out in the 21st century to perform to a pub full of jaded, downward-gazing faces lit up blue by their own phone screens whilst a giant nearby television blares adverts for cosmetic products. It’s a song about all of us, all of the time, trying to find our place in amongst the blizzards of pixels and the loneliness of the digital age.
