Flux 03:27
Flux I lick the future’s lips Crescent moon on the rise Little bird singing in my fist I’m a man, I’m a woman I’m a liminal mother of love I was changed By a cold mistake I never want to be changed back It’s all flux Don’t know yourself too much Your eyes beneath the lake My little bird is spilling her guts Long-dead limbs start to shake I’m a man, I’m a woman I’m a forest of falling love I was saved By your cruel mistake Now let me save you right back It’s all flux Don’t know yourself too much

Bug In Amber 04:07
Bug In Amber The ink beneath my skin Wet tea leaves in the morning Every moment where you hide They come to me like lightning Like Berlin in the spring It was ghostly to be alive It drums hard within me Slamming doors beneath the sea Are your arms still open wide? I forget so easy The smell of Mexico City And the light that burned our eyes How does it feel to breathe With no pain? To wash your body clean In a slow rain? To snooze on fire and dream You’ll be born again A bug in the amber Our fossils lost in the flood But I guess we did some good Let me see those trembling eyes Every spit and every spark Saigon in the boiling dark It was ghostly to be alive

Bloodline 03:27
Bloodline Standing there Pavement stains Another chest pressed down Do you ever change? Who’s been living on the front foot? Who’s been living on the front line? Say hello to your bloodline You’re living in a dream land If you don’t see the rot Sitting there with a fixed hand On top of all the things you’ve got It’s not enough to be half-awake While the poison trickles down Dripping through your bloodline now Say hello to your bloodline Stepping out now Burst my milky eyes Get my history down It’s time we got wise To every last crime Every smothered life Running through this bloodline Feel every name like a raindrop Gonna drown this hell Eyes up and then rip down Our centuries-old selves Put your money where your heart burns Put your rage on the line Stick a blade in your bloodline Stick a blade in the bloodline Standing there Pavement stains Another chest pressed down Will you ever change? No more living on the sidelines Here comes the shifting tide To roll over your bloodline

The Great Nowhere In the half-fantasised night-time The harbour drunk on moonshine There’s a sound of tragic wind chimes Where the boats no longer cruise My father’s voice comes to me Between the stillness and the mystery He says, “Don’t hit the brakes until you get free And don’t get free until you’re tough enough to lose” Don’t get free until you’re tough enough to lose One day I’ll just up and leave, Ma For a land as torn as we are Eden rots on a shelf in a glass jar Not far from where Virginia drowned Maybe there’s no shelter real enough Maybe the hurricane is one big bluff But the sky inside sure seems rough And I shiver as the rains come down I shiver as the rain comes down Rain just kept falling And it fell right through me So as the curtain drops on Sunday I sprinkle sermons in the ash tray Crave a fresh chest that I can smoke away And I rise from the lonely room Evening air calls up old romance You swaying to me in slow dance I picture young hips between these grey hands And slip away with the solstice gloom I slip away with the solstice gloom For a time the road seemed naked And the reckless alone could make it Find your God there, you’d better forsake it There’s a new faith sweeping town “Chin up,” says the kid with the smoking gun As he crosses his heart for the hidden sun He’s taking aim at a world he wishes undone But it’s all in another child’s hands now It all lay in another child’s hands now Rain just kept falling And it fell right through me I burned a match there on the church steps Knowing I’ve worshipped nothing real yet Well the ocean’s coming in to collect Mother nature’s gonna get square You’re the one regret I hold dear Now that no one’s bones grind so near I see the white horse rise to meet me here And find I’m grateful for the great nowhere I’m grateful for the great nowhere

Limitless 04:18
Limitless It strikes me It strikes you As limitless Then moon crush And sprinkled down To finish us So the wind is rushing Where your ribs unfurled Your heart is not The cold revolving world Still it strikes me It strikes you In turn after turn That we are limitless Outside me Outside you Is limitless So drum it down An aching sky For the spiritless Saw the glacier grinding Towards your door Your lips are not The salt-speckled shore Still it strikes me iIt strikes you In wave after wave That we are limitless Maranasati We’re weightless It strikes me It strikes you As limitless

New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve, dog-sick And now the door is swinging wide Coastal mud Bring the bones From the mountainside All I know Someone close And believed in New Year’s Eve, rhythm rising Through the clay To get me free Crack the ice Solar winds Blow this body out to sea All I know Someone close Now I’m leaving There is no sound that Breaks my heart Quite like this There is no sound that Breaks my heart like this Ocean bound Just give me one push and I’ll be Ocean bound Come on, this is me calling your bluff, and I’ll be Ocean bound New Year’s Eve, I’m a guest In every footprint On the beach Plunge my hands In the fire There’s a light I’d die to reach All I know is You are gold And believed in Ocean bound Just give me one push and I’ll be Ocean bound Come on, this is me calling your bluff, and I’ll be Ocean bound Just reach out Reach out and give me one push and I’ll be Ocean bound So I feel a belonging That does not belong to any place I smell the shelter of my own rough-cut singing And the shivering mountain Rising, rising over the red Rooftops of this long-gone town But I don’t grasp at the gearstick anymore I don’t swing the pendulum myself Or try shrink the slow violet creep of the clock Swelling like some gravity-drunk star Over the cliffs, over the grey cliffs The coastline unbottled there like broken ships We can dig in the wet clay of our time But the mystery is the most delicious slice Of our lives, we chase it down, we drink it up, We bound into that tangled forest of love With moth wings for eyes With moth wings for eyes, and we discover All things all at once, the dirt does not belong To no one, I see your shadow Slice the vapour of this night and I am grateful, I am grateful, I am grateful The sheer weight of you in my chest as I inhale I am grateful We share a glance and then gone, one glance and then gone And then gone into the starless swing of beyond And I am not the only one To wake early to the sound of nothing And feel drunk on the wonder, Drunk on the wonder, Hear a call to answer, Hear the song split the thunder And chase that sound through the dawn My mouth full of the cold And the coffee-crumbs And the terrific aching question Out into the damp of the next day Into the damp of the next day With the whisper of the real world Always catching me wide-awake As I step out into the other one And disappear

Act Of Vengeance Count your breaths and count yourself A creature of the uncommonwealth Your lightning veins shock hell to high heaven I vaulted every shrine to find Your unbeaten heart, your drumming mind You cranked the revolution up a level Waves of madness blown against us Swollen suits and dream-dementors With ice pick eyes we’ll chip away their stone-cold lies I see the ocean bears resemblance To your dance, an act of vengeance One day, baby, you’ll bring down the whole damn cliffside! We’ve been convalescing loud and proud Plug your ears but we’re screaming now That’s a seismic shift that you can feel Come rage around your books and maps The change is coming thick and fast High time a fresh breed took the wheel The music moves you through dimensions Dream out loud, it’s an act of vengeance Can you feel the grip around your spirit weaken? The galaxies in you are endless Your lust for life, an act of vengeance Set yourself alight, you might be someone else’s beacon Man alive! So I strap my boots on, pound the earth Go looking for that primal thirst The spark that lit the fuse on every story There’s Bessie belting out the truth A Bronte spilling ink as proof That every vision is some act of glory I got sucked into plug hole eyes Cradled love in the psych-ward light On the edge you can really see the future rise There goes hatred passing sentence Loving yourself’s an act of vengeance Wake up to who you are, you got them mesmerised! Man alive!

In Daylight 03:55
In Daylight Yes I’m getting better, babe Though each breath still tastes of clay And I miss the ocean rain I’m dreaming up some bleak horizon Where the sun is also rising And the earth’s a mess of caved-in veins I’ll own up to each and every song That stained your teeth Opened wide with morning yawn The universe’ll gulp us down so easy Electro-shock the batshit globe Before we go, you know you always mystified me And you just press your head to mine In daylight A magnet to a box of bones Call the mower to our home Future’s getting kind of real You said, “Don’t drink the suffering Of a world you won’t be in, I like you drunk on things we both still feel” I’ll own up to each and every spark That singed your sleep
9.
Some Miracle 04:10
Some Miracle The linden tree again in bloom We see it from our dusty room And flick through all the times we noticed spring The powdered earth is part of you The weathered bark, the morning dew I wish I was made up of those natural things But see me in times of crisis, dear In the fungal trunk of a rotten year While you go out looking for new life to bless I’ll be damned, I’ll be damned If we cannot make some miracle of this mess All through the draughty afternoon I await the solace of the moon And watch you tend your garden with such pride I cannot help but fantasise The flowers melt before your eyes The door to hot destruction is opened wide When I can face an inward look I’ll rip some leaves out of your book And trace the gnarled roots down to my own chest I’ll be damned, I’ll be damned If we cannot make some miracle of this mess While most try keep their spirits low Your vertical illusions grow I’m just calling to collect my clothes Before I get back on the road I’ve hounded you enough, now I must keep moving Please try erase the words I wrote The pulsing of my bitter throat Why must we draw maps back to every bruising? I’ll think of you on colder days When the earth tilts to shade your face And I’ll know that I should not have loved you less I’ll be damned, I’ll be damned If we cannot make some miracle of this mess While most try keep their spirits low Your vertical illusions grow
10.
Half Alive On my dime a dozen mornings You can smell the sweet salt rain And the bitterness that rots beneath the land It’s a long line of raw deals, honey In this crooked game I’m just sorry it was me that Dealt your hand One or two white lies And then God’s honest truth I was only half alive Without you In my dime a dozen daydreams I am running hard and wild Where the sky is held up By the snowy pines I’m not running for my future I’m just running for my life And to fall across that Golden state line One or two white lies And then God’s honest truth I was only half alive Without you On my dime a dozen death bed I will dream up gentle hands That tried to wring some goodness From these bones If you can’t outrun your history You don’t stand a goddamn chance And in my dreams I’m always running home Time can tell no lies And my time’s coming soon I was only half alive I was never really alive I was only half alive Without you
11.
Pass The Time Pass the time It’s not that I want to curl up and die But it goes easy when it kind of flies by Sometimes this life Can feel like one long insomniac night Pass the time Bit of whisky, a little red wine World spins soft when I’m out of my mind Slowing down the sky See that North Star? If I swim out that far I’ll get me a decent head start Trash the heavens and I’ll break God’s heart It’d pass the time Come to your window, see me racing by In my rush to be the last one alive First to arrive At the creature I could’ve been Counting nothing but my dreams And I hear your tick-tock heart And the gears grind in mine Nothing lasts, so how about that fresh start? Nobody’s dead, but everybody’s got to die Pass the time Set my soul for the horizon line Leave them dying for more than what I leave behind When I cross that line Wormfood or kingdom of the divine I’ll know it’s been so sublime Just to pass the time

about

About Lick The Future's Lips

'The album's songs all revolve around a sense of impermanence. The idea that all things are in a constant state of flux, and how vivid and alive everything seems when we embrace this and let go of our need to pin things down. The songs were almost all written during a time of global crisis, but I wanted to push against my own typical response (which in the past has been to retreat, hide under a blanket and indulge in the darkness). The struggles going on all around us are an inevitable presence in the songs, but through that I wanted to try capture a defiant thirst for life in all its twisted beauty. A desire to get outside and dance and be in love and be grateful for the time we've got, even though some days it might look like the world is falling apart around us.

Recording with the band for one week at a studio in London Fields, we felt this euphoria of all being together making music for the first time after months of isolation. I hope you can hear that on the record, that feeling of gratitude and experimentation and playfulness. We listened to music together every morning and drank pretentious coffee as the morning sun shone in. We laughed and sang and talked openly about how tough this time has been for each of us in different ways. We left politics and The News at the door. We worked on the songs late into the nights and often lost the plot, recording radiators being whacked and cymbals being chucked around the room. I hope when people listen they might sense this music was made by five people lost to the task of trying to capture something positive and celebratory about this time we're living through.'
